Every year, 22nd December is celebrated as National Mathematics Day in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22 nd , 1887 at E rode, Tamil Nadu in a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family. At age 12, despite lacking a formal education, he excelled at trigonometry and developed many theorems for himself. Ramanujan’s mathematical genius was such that he discovered his own theorems and independently compiled 3900 results.

India's National Mathematics Day is celebrated every 22 nd December with numerous Educational events held at schools and universities throughout the country. In 2017, the day's significance was enhanced by the opening of the Ramanujan Math Park in Kuppam, in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. National Mathematics day 2021 was celebrated by the Department of Basic Science on 23 rd December 2021 by conducting various competitions to all students like Power Point Presentation, Penc il Sketch Portrait, and Collage making at Sri Ramasabha Bhavana, Sir M Visvesarayya Hall and Homi J Baba Hall, VCET. Dr Mahesh Prasanna K, The Principal, VCET graced the occasion. HoD’s of various departments were part of this program.

Many students participated in these competitions with great enthusiasm. Power Point Presentation included the themes like Great Indian Mathematicians, Vedic Mathematics and Interesting facts in Mathematics. The first prize won by Rajashree of 3 rd semester Computer Science and Engineering and the second prize was won by Vidhisha V Bhat of 3 rd semester Electronics and Communication engineering. The theme of Pencil Sketch Portrait was Great Mathematicians. The first prize won by Divyashree S of 5th semester Electronics and Commu nication engineering and the second prize won by Seema K of 5th semester Computer Science and Engineering . The Collage making competition was a team event consisting of two participants with the theme named Mathematics in Everyday Life. The first prize grabbed by team of Yashwitha M and Shrutha Jain of First year ‘D’ section and second prize by G Ashwath Kumar and Hemanth N M of 3rd semester Artificial Intelligence and machine Learning.

Under the guidance of Prof. M. Ramananda Kamath, HoD Department of Basic science, the program was coordinated by Prof Nayana P, Dept of Mathematics with the involvement and contribution of all fellow colleagues.
