About VCET
Overview
Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha Puttur® (VVSP: Formerly known as Puttur Education Society) was founded on the 23rd of December 1915. For over nine decades, Vidyavardhaka Sangha has been the forerunner in the field of education in the coastal region of Karnataka. It is committed to impart quality education by maintaining high standards of discipline, sense of duty and moral values among its students, and to inculcate faith and pride in Indian culture and tradition.
The former Puttur Education Society was founded by great visionaries like Molahalli Shiva Rao, Baindoor Rama Rao, Dharmastala Chandayya Hegde, Rao Bahaddur Raghunatha Rao, and a host of others who succeeded in establishing the first Secondary School in 1916 in Puttur-which is now well known as Govt. Pre-University College, Kombettu, Puttur. The invaluable contributions of stalwarts like Baindoor Prabhakar Rao- the leading light of the co-operative movement in South Kanara, Jnanapeeta award winner Dr. Kota Shivarama Karanth, and Sri K. Rama Bhat, Ex-MLA – a leading lawyer and also a social activist, raised the Society to greater heights.
The establishment of Vivekananda College of Arts, Science and Commerce in the year 1965 was a milestone in the history of the VVSP. The first step of channelising technical education into Puttur was in the form of establishing Vivekananda Polytechnic in the year 1986, followed by the establishment of Vivekananda College of Engineering & Technology in 2001. In 2007, Vivekananda School of Business Management (MBA) was started. Today, VVSP is running more than 48 educational institutes which range from Kindergartens to High Schools, from conventional Degree Colleges to Teacher Training Programmes and from Law to Technical Institutes. Named after the great Saint Swami Vivekananda, the Sangha is striving hard to inculcate in the students a sense of patriotism and pride in the great heritage of this country. The VVSP also provides free mid-day meals to the economically poor students; most of them who come from backward areas of the district.
All the institutes established by the VVSP, irrespective of its nature and size, have become centres of excellence. Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha aims at moulding the character and inculcating high sense of discipline among its students and staff.
The functioning of the VVSP is totally transparent and democratic in nature. Each institute is managed by a Governing Council comprising of representatives elected from amongst its members at various levels of the management.

Vivekananda College of Engineering & Technology (VCET), Puttur, aims to provide holistic approach to shape the overall personality of every student by imbibing the spirit of Engineering discipline with moral values.
VCET, established in 2001, achieved a distinct status of a premier college in coastal area in Dakshina Kannada District due to its strong emphasis on teaching & learning through experimentation & exposure. Started with UG courses in Computer Science & Engg. and Electronics & Communication Engg., the institute currently runs with 5 UG programmes & a PG programme affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and approved by the Government of Karnataka. Due to the need of the current trend, we are starting a new programme in UG, namely, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Current annual intake of UG & PG programmes is in excess of 500.
Institute is located amidst a sprawling campus of 25 acres, full of greenery, the hilly picturesque and an eco-friendly ambience. It has splendid building and state of the art facilities.
VCET has well qualified & dedicated faculty with concern for students. Faculty with commitment to education & scholarly activities achieved many a tasks like, publishing a journal of their own – ‘VCET Science & Technology Journal’. Competent faculty helped VCET, to adopt a process approach towards academics – ISO & Outcome Based Education (OBE) framework to align with the world’s technical requirement. VCET faculty use new pedagogical practices in Teaching–Learning process to teach and train our students in a unique and creative way. Involvement of faculty in research work lead to recognition of 4 research centers under VTU.
There is a sense of vibrancy in the campus which is bustling with activities. Over 200 Curricular & extra- Curricular activities are conducted every year. A special feature of VCET is participation of students in academic governance.
Our motto is to provide quality education and thereby enabling the students to become globally competent. Education is not an act of acquiring knowledge but learning a skill to lead life and forming one’s personality. Keeping this in mind, VCET has initiated various value add-on courses and soft skill programmes to mould the students by blending soft skill with the academic knowledge so that they are readily employable by the companies/ industries. VCET is therefore the preferred destination for companies/ industries looking for young & bright graduates and it has proven record of more than 400+ students getting placed every year.
I strongly believe that the students will make use of these opportunities and best facilities to emerge as the competent professionals and great human beings. Let all of us strive for the attainment of excellence and holistic development of young minds.
