The Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI&ML), Vivekananda College of Engineering and Technology (VCET), Puttur, organized a workshop titled “RAG from Scratch” on 27 October 2026. The workshop was conducted in association with the Artificial Intelligence Students Association (AISA), the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science), the IEEE VCET Student Branch (STB11471), and ISTE, VCET.
The resource person for the workshop was Mr. K. G. Varun Rai, Software Application Developer at HP Inc. and an alumnus of VCET from the 2023 batch. His participation made the session particularly meaningful, as it provided students with an opportunity to learn from an alumnus who has progressed into the software industry.
The workshop focused on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), an important technique in modern artificial intelligence that combines information retrieval with generative AI models to produce contextually relevant and informative responses. The session aimed to enhance students’ understanding of RAG concepts and provide insights into building RAG-based applications from scratch.
More than 50 students from the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science) benefited from the workshop. The programme offered students an opportunity to explore emerging AI technologies, strengthen their technical knowledge, and gain industry-oriented insights into the practical applications of generative AI.
The workshop reflected VCET’s commitment to promoting technical learning, industry interaction, and knowledge sharing among students. It also highlighted the valuable contribution of alumni in guiding and inspiring the next generation of engineers.
The programme was supported by the management, principal, heads of departments, faculty members, and event coordinators of VCET. Conclusion: The workshop “RAG from Scratch” served as a valuable learning opportunity for students across the three departments, helping them gain exposure to anemerging area of artificial intelligence and encouraging them to explore practical applications of RAG technology.
